All About Corns on the Feet

Corns are hard bumps of skin that form on the feet in response to pressure. There are two types of corns - hard and soft. Hard corns typically form on the tops of the toes or on the sides of the pinky toes, where soft corns generally form between the toes. One of the most common causes of corns is wearing shoes that do not fit properly, as well as uneven pressure distributed between the feet. Pressure and friction from shoes rubbing against the skin irritates it, creating hardened layers of rough, tough, lumpy, and sometimes discolored skin. People who have foot deformities like hammertoes or bunions may be more prone to developing corns. If you have corns on your feet that are causing you pain or discomfort, please see a podiatrist for treatment.

Can I Measure My Feet at Home?

When it comes to the health and comfort of your feet, wearing the right shoe size is very important. You can have your feet measured at the shoe store by using a brannock device, but you can also measure your feet at home. Follow these steps to measure your feet in the comfort of your home. First, tape two blank pieces of paper to the floor. Sit in a chair and place one foot on one of the pieces of paper. Using a pencil, trace the outline of your foot closely, holding the pencil perpendicular to the paper rather than at an angle. Once you're done tracing, draw straight lines touching the outermost points at the top, bottom, and sides of your tracing. Next, use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the length and width of your feet. Repeat these steps with your other foot. If your feet are different sizes, this is normal. Use the foot with the larger measurements when looking at a sizing chart to convert your foot’s length and width into the appropriate shoe size. For more information about how to find the right shoe size, consult with a podiatrist.

Finding a properly-fitting shoe is important in reducing injuries and preventing foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Henry Miller from New Jersey. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the most common source of heel pain and is the result of inflammation or a strain of the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is the flat band of tissue that supports the arch of the foot by running along the bottom of the foot and connecting the heel to the toes. Plantar fasciitis can have a variety of causes. Patients who are obese or have gained weight are susceptible to plantar fasciitis due to the stress the extra weight puts ont the feet. Long distance runners are at a higher risk of developing this condition because of the extreme shock to the heel. Other issues that can lead to plantar fasciitis include a tight Achilles tendon, shoes that don’t fit correctly, a sudden increase in exercise, active jobs, or structural foot problems like flat feet. If you are suffering from heel pain, and you are unsure of the source, a podiatrist will be able to help diagnose and treat your heel pain.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Dr. Henry Miller  from New Jersey. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office located in Freehold, NJ . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Broken Toes, Healing, and Running

Research has indicated that one of the most common ways to break your toe is by stubbing it. This can affect many people who enjoy the sport of running, and it is beneficial to rest the broken toe until the healing process is complete. Some of the symptoms that are experienced can consist of possible bruising under the skin, noticeable deformity, and the area may be tender and swollen. An effective treatment approach for fractured toes can include using the buddy taping method. This is done by taping the broken toe to the toe next to it, and this is helpful in providing the stability that is necessary for healing. If you have questions about broken toe recovery and how it affects running, please consult with a podiatrist.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Henry Miller from New Jersey. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.
